c5Lab and LNEC study shows that cement paste in CDW can absorb 5-35% of CO2 through forced carbonation

A study by c5Lab researchers Catarina Brazão Farinha, Cinthia Maia Pederneiras, David Bastos and Ricardo Infante Gomes, in partnership with LNEC researchers Maria Rosário Veiga, António Santos Silva, and Isabel Milagre Martins, revealed that cement paste adhered to Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) can absorb between 5% and 35% of carbon dioxide (CO2) through its forced carbonation.

The study was presented as a conference paper by Isabel Milagre Martins, from LNEC, at the 5th International Conference Progress of Recycling in the Built Environment, which took place between October 10 and 12 in Weimar, Germany.

The cement industry must become carbon neutral by 2050. To achieve this goal, the international community has joined forces by defining strategies described in the Roadmap for the Decarbonization of the Cement Industry.
