ATIC (cement association), together with CIMPOR and SECIL (its associates), decided to partner with Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) - integrating the laboratory units (IDMEC, CQE, CERIS, CERENA and IN+) of its departments of Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil and Environment, as well as the other institutes - and the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), to constitute the collaborative laboratory C5Lab.
ATIC, Cement Industry Technical Association, created in the 60s to promote a better use of cement, is the representative organization for the Portuguese cement industry.
Focusing on the monitoring of legislative procedures that have, directly or indirectly, impact on the cement industry, assumes the dissemination of the value created for society by products and construction solutions based on cement.
ATIC has as associates CIMPOR, SECIL and CMP - Cimentos Maceira e Pataias, SA.
Since its inception, it actively collaborates with national institutions and companies in the development of products and in the implementation of new constructive and structural solutions focusing on the monitoring of legislative procedures
Cimpor, founded in 1976 and based in Portugal, is among the ten largest cement groups operating in the world market. It is present in eight countries (Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Cape Verde, Egypt, Mozambique and South Africa) and has about 8900 employees, from 30 nationalities.
Cimpor's main activity is the production and sale of cement. With 40 production units in the world and with an annual cement production capacity of 46 million tons, the Cimpor group also produces and sells concrete, aggregates and mortars, with a view to vertical integration of the businesses.
Secil is a business Group whose activity is based on the production and sale of cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates, mortars, prefabricated concrete structures and hydraulic lime. It also includes other companies operating in complementary areas such as the development of solutions in the field of environmental protection and the use of waste as an energy source.
The Secil group is consolidated in Portugal, where it originated, and has expanded over the past two decades to other markets. It currently operates three cement plants in Portugal (Outão, Maceira and Cibra) and is present abroad in Angola, Tunisia, Lebanon, Cape Verde, the Netherlands and Brazil.
Through its eight cement plants and its presence in seven countries on four continents, the Secil Group guarantees an annual capacity of cement production of over nine million tonnes.
Involving a community of over 10.000 people, IST is the largest school of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology in Portugal.
IST aims to contribute to the development of society, promoting and sharing excellence in higher education in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, Science and Technology. Técnico offers Bachelor, Master and PhD programs, lifelong training and develops Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) activities, which are essential to provide an education based on the top international standards.
IST participates at C5Lab through five research centers: IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, CERIS - Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, CERENA - Centro de Recursos Naturais e Ambiente, CQE - Centro de Química Estrutural and NanoMatLab - Nanostructured Materials and Nanotechnologies Laboratory.
LNEC, National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, is a public institute of Science and Technology (S&T), with the status of State Laboratory that carries out research in all fields of civil engineering, giving it a unique multidisciplinary perspective.
In its field of expertise, LNEC is a national asset which guides its activity towards public service values, embedded in a culture that appeals to high standards of ethics, impartiality and trustworthiness. Continuous investment in innovation, in the improvement and dissemination of Knowledge has enabled an adequate response to the constant evolution of Science and Technology.
