The initiative aimed to publicize the results of the last edition of the European Researchers' Night and promote the sharing of experiences between researchers and representatives of various institutions in the city of Lisbon.

A study by c5Lab researchers Catarina Brazão Farinha, Cinthia Maia Pederneiras, David Bastos and Ricardo Infante Gomes, in partnership with LNEC researchers Maria Rosário Veiga, António Santos Silva, and Isabel Milagre Martins, revealed that cement paste adhered to Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) can absorb between 5% and 35% of carbon dioxide (CO2) through its forced carbonation.

The c5Lab researcher Daniela Spataru took part in the 15th European Catalysis Congress, which took place between August 27 and September 1 in Prague. The work, presented as a poster, dealt with the study of more realistic conditions for the Sabatier reaction, which aims to combine CO2 and green hydrogen to produce methane, as a promising alternative for decarbonizing the cement industry.

On the same day that World Environment Day was celebrated, the second edition of c5Lab was held, an initiative that brought together the c5Lab employees to celebrate the 4th anniversary of the collaborative laboratory. Throughout the day, team-building activities were carried out to strengthen relations between employees and promote teamwork.

The researcher was part of the session dedicated to technologies for decarbonisation, where he presented the communication “Photosynthesis and CCU Technologies”.

A study led by c5Lab researcher Francisco Capucha, in partnership with researchers from the Institute of Welding and Quality and the IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, concludes that the implementation of an industrial symbiosis model in the European cement industry can reduce, by 6 to 12%, the emission of greenhouse gases. This reduction depends on the approach to biogenic carbon (non-fossil origin) since its use can substantially influence the results.

The president of the Scientific Council of c5Lab and full professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, João Bordado, was distinguished with the “Career and Recognition Prize”, awarded by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais (SPM) at the closing ceremony of the conference “Materiais 2023”, which took place in Guimarães, last April.

A study carried out by researchers from the c5Lab, the CQE - Center for Structural Chemistry, and CERENA - Center for Natural Resources and the Environment identified and quantified, for the first time, the sugar content of the aqueous extract of the bio-oil produced by the thermochemical liquefaction of Eucalyptus globulus sawdust, using the HPLC chromatographic methodology.

The c5Lab was present at “TECH4INNOV: the Present and the Future of Innovation in Portugal”, an initiative promoted by the Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI), which took place on March 29, in Santa Maria da Feira, with the aim of presenting some R&D projects for the capture and conversion of CO2 and the production of more sustainable cements.

Researchers from the c5Lab and Instituto Superior Técnico recently published an article in the scientific journal “Journal of CO2 Utilization” result of a scientific research on the performance of wastes of marble powders and natural geological materials used as sorbents in CO2 capture, through Ca-looping technology. In this study, the sorbents’s CO2 capture capacity at a laboratory scale, using a real flue gas from a cement plant was evaluated, allowing the laboratory conditions to mimic possible future industrial applications.

Researcher Catarina Farinha is guest editor of a special edition of the international journal “Applied Sciences”, dedicated to new advances in the recycling of construction and demolition waste. The special edition was launched in early 2023 and will last between six months and one year and the invitations for publication are ongoing.

Nazaré Green Hydrogen Valley (NGHV) consortium is set to unite leading industrial players in Portugal’s central region of Marinha Grande. The consortium plans to put forward an innovative decarbonization plan though the use of green hydrogen. The project titled "Nazaré Green Hydrogen Valley" represents 10% of CO2 emissions within whole industrial sector of Portugal, thus having a strong impact on sector sustainability, exports and communities. NHGV aims to replicate this approach nationwide.
